Final Beam Signed for New State-of-the-Art Science Building

The Butte College Superintendent/President and Board of Trustees are seen signing a steel beam.

The Butte College Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students celebrated a major milestone in the construction of the college’s new science building by signing the final beam that will top off the 72,276-square-foot facility. The campus community gathered at the construction site at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17.

Butte College Superintendent/President Virginia Guleff addressed attendees and remarked, “this building is remarkable not only in its outward design but in the way the instructional space has been reimagined.”

“This is a major step towards creating a student-ready college,” she added. “This science building is a testament to the college’s – to your – dedication to students and their success.”

Construction of the new facility began in April of 2023, with a planned opening in fall 2025. When completed, the building will feature a state-of-the-art planetarium, sustainable facilities, upgraded classrooms, and collaborative study spaces to support hands-on teaching and peer-based learning. It will support instruction for majors in STEM, construction management, nursing, allied health, and students taking general education in the sciences.

This project is funded by Measure J, a $190 million bond measure approved by voters in November 2016, and the state’s Physical Plant and Instructional Support Block Grant. JK Architecture Engineering designed the science building with Modern Building-Clark/Sullivan Construction Joint Venture leading the construction.
